Social work is a very demanding and challenging role and
involves working with people who may be at risk of danger or abuse
as well as with general mental health issues. Some clients may find
themselves excluded from main stream society. Therapists also work
with people who may be experiencing a period of crisis in their
life. The aim of the social worker is to help develop the skills of
those needing help, so that they are in a position where by they
can help themselves. It is more than just a standard job, it is a
career choice only suited for those who are fully committed to the
role. A social worker will need to remain professional, whist
providing guidance, reassurance and advice. Networking with other
bodies such as the police and healthcare professionals is
important, and their work may take place in schools, hospitals and
people’s homes.
Most social work, centers on the family and domestic issues. The
work is not confined to family issues however and may also involve
the following:
Young offenders and prison inmates facing release are an important
population. Therapists get involved with helping people back into
work. They also help with rehousing and the basic provision of
educational key skills, so that the offender does not need to
continue to rely on crime as a source of income.
Mental illness is a serious illness requiring support and helping
people get insight. This is varied work and is very much dependent
on the individual concerned. Work can revolve around integrating
the individual into mainstream society, whilst helping with the
provision of a support network which may include individual and
group therapy.
School truants and non-attenders are another area of focus. This
aspect covers a very important issues and helps ensure that as many
children as possible remain engaged with the education system. Work
with truants provides an important central point of contact
between; the school, local education authority, parents and child.
Social workers aim to deal with the behavioral and emotional
problems which may be creating a barrier to education.
Individuals suffering the effects of drugs and alcohol abuse are a
group that receive counseling. Social workers will aim to get those
suffering from substance abuse into rehabilitation programs to help
rid them of their addiction.
Elderly people with no family support network often feel alone.
This can involve helping with day to day tasks such as house work,
food shopping etc. Social worker will act as a friend so that the
individual does not feel lonely an cut off from society.
