Holidays are traditionally the perfect time for catching up on a good read. Whether you're a regular bookworm or you're a casual browser, there's nothing like a long plane ride or an uninterrupted afternoon by the pool for delving into a book.

The type of books that people choose to take with them on holiday tends to vary greatly however, with some hunting for quick and easy reads and others treating their time away as the perfect time to get their teeth into the weightier texts they've always meant to read but never seem to get round to.

For plenty of people, choosing which books to pack in their suitcase is half the fun. But don't discount the folks who like to pick their books on the way to the airport, it can be the official start to the holiday for some - when they throw their book in to their bag alongside their tickets and sun cream.

From War and Peace to the latest James Patterson, the types of books people choose to read on their holidays are as varied as the types of holidays themselves. Although, backpackers may be more likely to pack slimmer books than those planning to stay in one hotel for the entirety of their trip!

While the general trend tends to see people plumping for fiction on their trips, there's much to be said for choosing an informational read to help you while away the hours on your holiday. Fun factual books can be ideal for dipping in and out of, making them a great choice for those who're planning and action packed holiday and may have to fit their reading time around activities.

Books made of sterner stuff might require a little more concentration, but if you can find the time, you'll find that not only do they provide a good mental workout - but they are likely to be an excellent aid to conversation too - always handy when holidaying with friends or a loved one!

On the other hand, books about the destination you are travelling to can be an excellent choice and really add some depth to the experience and they don't have to be travel book either. Cookery books, history books and books about the county's cultural movements can provide just the inspiration you're looking for. Whatever you choose as your holiday reading matter though, make sure you pack a backup - you never know when your flight may be delayed!
