Oil Petroleum Products in the world are getting costlier day by day as the prices of crude oil are on the rise. The domestic oil need is increased by almost 35% while there is a nearly 1/3rd decline in the national oil supply in the United States. In this scenario the reliance on oil sands seems to be a natural choice to turn to. The Alberta Oil Sands in Canada are considered to be the dirtiest of the oil bit it is a matter of fact that this place has Canada’s 97% of oil supplies. These Alberta Tar Sands are unusual resources that require special efforts to recover the oil.
We are already moving to the peak oil point. Although some experts consider it as a myth, the halfway point is peak of supply, and is commonly termed as peak oil. The precise point of the peak oil will be clear only in future, but it is by now pretty close. The exact point does not matter much really. What really matter is that most of the oil is already burned up and require millions and billions of years to produce the same amount. This is one of the prime reasons cited for increased pricing of oil petroleum products. The concept of the peak oil has been exceedingly politicized for diverse reasons. Perhaps there is the concern that people will start to panic once the truth about the oil supply is publicly known.
Today the Alberta Tar Sands are producing nearly 3-4 million barrels a day and it is forecasted that the output will eventually triple by 2015. However, getting there is not easy. It requires lot of efforts and energy to extract crude oil from the Canadian Oil Sands. Generally it uses the coal gasification process. The foremost problem, however with this sort of process is that it requires energy for the creation of energy.
Also the infrastructure to create the massive conversions will require more capital and is time consuming. As it is the oil companies are functioning overtime to lessen the economic costs. The Oil Investors may not be as ready to invest in this kind of project considering that cost is so high. It requires technological innovation to counter these problems and reduce the carbon footprint and lessen the environmental hazard. Such an innovation is recently done by the MCW Energy Group.
