If you miss out on Backwaters it is said Kerala tours is
incomplete. Backwater is a unique Kerala phenomenon. Nowhere else
in the world you may find such occurrence. Backwater is the complex
network of manmade and natural canals and inlets, estuaries of over
forty rivers and five lakes. The setting of backwaters is mind
blowing with shores adorned by abodes and monuments, swaying
coconut trees, emerald vegetation and lush green paddy fields,
fishing nets and sights of day to day activities; and backwaters
embellished by water flowers especially water lilies. Cruises
through backwaters savoring this landscape are high on the agenda
of visitors. Although backwater is an all Kerala phenomenon, for
the time being Alleppey, Kochi, Kollam and Kumarakom are the main
centers for backwater tourism. While on the cruise sojourns at
various islands are also attractive propositions for tourists.
Houseboats are the hot properties of backwater tourism for now.
Houseboats are modeled on “Kettuvallams “of
yesteryears. Kettuvallams were used to transport rice and other
household items through backwaters. They came with thatched roofs
over wooden hulls to offer protection from elements of nature.
Though the form remains largely unaltered, Houseboats are two to
three storied affairs with one to five bedrooms included. Apart
from sleeping space, there are dining space and a sit out open on
all sides. From this sit out guests can savor the backwaters.
Houseboats are attached with generators providing for air
conditioning. A crew including a cook accompanies guests. The menu
is usually indigenous variety with local fish included. Although
Houseboats are motorized, they are run in a meandering pace. This
lets the tourists savor the charm of backwaters fully.
