Native transfer speed & the native recording ability of the
efficient Sony AIT-5 data tape format are 24 MB/s and 400 GB
respectively. Sony AIT5 half
height 3.5 inch form factor uses the SCSI ultra-160 LVD/SE
interface. AIT-5 technology protects the investment as it is
capable of reading & writing the tape media of AIT-4, AIT3 and
AIT-3Ex. Sony AIT5 tape products are very proficient and consume
less energy. Before launching the Sony AIT products into the
market, they are rigorously and carefully tested to check their
durability and performance.
AIT-5 is one of the first tape media in 8mm tape format with
recording space of 400GB. AIT-5 format has flux sensing magneto
resistive heads that provide enhanced read/write sensitivity. MR
heads provide compatibility to AIT-5 with AIT-3Ex, AIT3 and AIT 4
tape formats. Signal tracking mechanism of Sony AIT-5 is
dynamic and is optimized to read back data. Signal tracking
mechanism also minimizes the effect of distortion. Each of the four
reading heads are used in dynamic tracking and position of the head
is controlled by DT servo during back reading of data. Even if the
track paths are narrow, tight or not straight, dynamic tracking
helps the magneto resistive head in following the track paths.
MR heads in AIT5 tape technology helps it to accommodate higher
densities of recording and allows greater recording capacity per
tape cartridge. S/N in AIT-5 is 10 db higher in comparison to the
MIG head utilized in the AIT-4 and AIT 3 backup tape technology.
AME-II technology is used on AIT4 tape format while in AIT-5 tape
format the advanced form of AME called AME-III technology is used.
The head life is maximized and the surface area is made even
smoother due to the AME-III technology. The particle size in AIT-4
tape media is about 5-7 nm. While the AME-III in Sony AIT-5 further
reduces the size and the average particle size is about 3nm to
4nm.
Quality of Signal to noise ratio is improved in AIT5 as AME-III
technology and the combination of MR-head lowers the noise and
gives higher output. Back coating of AME-III upgrades the tape
media reliability and also helps to lower the friction. Operations
of Sony AIT-5 are carried out smoothly due to the AMEIII that
enhances the tape life and integrity of backup data. It makes the
tape media more durable and provides the desired results in heavy
and severe working conditions. Frequent cleaning is not necessary
in Sony AIT5 tape media. Recording technology used in AIT is
helical-scan that has platform of rotating head/drum which is very
stable. This technology assists in reliable and accurate storage of
data and the track densities are also very high. The recording
process is carried out and the tape is not constantly repositioned
back & forth.
Sony AIT 5 is the first tape technology that has introduced the new
innovative MR heads. These new heads have the latest technology to
support higher densities of data recording that is why the AIT-5
format is capable to storing more information on tape media
cartridge. MR heads builds the platform for increased capacity and
performance of read-write. When data is read, the position of
MR-head is controlled automatically by the dynamic tracking
process. Recorded data is tracked and adjusted automatically by the
AIT5 tape head to get the maximum recovery and strength of data
read back. Recording distortion’s effect is minimized and the
quality of data read back is elevated by the dynamic tracking
system. So in this way the recovery of data is ensured.
